The Day After the VA Rally

Yesterday, 1/20/20, was the large pro-2A rally in Virginia.

What was accomplished?  That’s a question that already makes people uncomfortable.

On the surface, it showed how peaceful and orderly the Right is. Take over 20,000 armed and angry people, mix them together and the result isn’t a single accidental shooting or even one minor arrest. That alone should speak to the quality of people concerned. Add to that nary a spec of litter (a widely circulated picture even shows multiple attendees scraping stickers off the road), and one would have expected worse from the Lutheran Women’s Club.

But civic responsibility wasn’t the goal, was it?

Between the breathless anticipation by the MSM of violence (there wasn’t so much as a twisted ankle reported) and “ominous chanting” (it was the Pledge of Allegiance), what did the Democrats around the Country see as opposition to a tyrannical power grab?

Paper tigers.

How you can have that much pent up frustration and anger in one place and not come off even a bit intimidating takes work.  Yes, absolutely wonderful there was no violence, but there was no undercurrent of impending violence, either. No sense of a determined force to be reckoned with at someone’s peril.

Where there should have been a sea of torches and pitchforks there was one Barrett .50BMG, a shoddy guillotine, and a hot dog roast. It turned into one notch shy of a street fair. Then the cops illegally seized and tore apart the guillotine, so that image was lost.

The governor issued a statement thanking the police for saving the day from chaos, ignoring that many uniformed sheriffs and their deputies were part of the demonstration.

First thing this morning, the Democrats issued a statement that the rally wasn’t going to change their tactics at all. And, why should it?  Did it leave the fear of consequence in anyone?  No. It didn’t.

It makes one wonder why anyone bothered. Even a good chunk of the industry partied in Las Vegas at the SHOT Show at the other end of the country. They didn’t even have a moment of silence for the thoughts of their brothers in the streets of VA.

But, isn’t civility always to be lauded?  Yes and no. Comporting themselves well, yes, but to not effectively warn someone of violent consequences to their continued actions is not. It would be like complimenting a rattlesnake that it didn’t rattle before sinking its fangs into you.

Primarily, this was a lost opportunity.  No one came away thinking we’re one step closer to bloodshed. Tucker Carlson put up with much worse in front of his house for telling the truth than the VA government did for subverting the Constitution of the United States.

Ironically, this is more likely to lead to bloodshed. A ruffian knowing they face a steadfast opponent is less likely to push the issue than one who thinks their opponent just blinked.

So, there you have it. Born a nation of strong men, we have become a nation of polite men.
