Transitioning a Society

Image
This "quarantine" was intended to "flatten the curve".  Mission accomplished.  Now, get out of our way so we can fix the damage done by you, the politician. It was never about making sure no one ever caught the virus.  In fact, for herd immunity to work, the majority of people need to be exposed and build anti-bodies against the contagion.  We are prolonging the inevitable by keeping people locked down and businesses closed.  Once everything opens, there will be a spike in COVID-19 cases, and that is OK. The greatest threat to America and the world right now is not the virus, it is the transfer of power from the people to the politicians.  It's transferring because we are all obeying orders which are schizophrenic (release murders and put paddle boarders in jail) and downright illegal (where does the Constitution list who is "essential" and who is not?). Historically and Biblically, the sick were quarantined while the healthy went about the busin...

Quarentine Reading List

Image
If the virus can be kept at bay and enough work done at home to satisfy the boss, these days may be gifts for a lot of you. I've mentioned it before, but you can choose to binge watch some mindless sludge of a TV show (the one with tigers in it which is such the rage right now just proves my point), or, you can use the time to discover real entertainment and knowledge. In that vein, I, like every other blogger out there, am going to make a reading list for your consideration. First up, The Hobbit   by J.R.R. Tolien. If you have somehow missed reading it until now, please don't rely on the movie, not even the animated one from the 1970's.  The book is oh so much better.  Follow Bilbo Baggins on the adventure that brought fantasy to the modern era. From delightful fiction to horrific non-fiction, The Great Influenza   by John Barry.  Paperbacks are currently out of stock (I wonder why?), you can certainly get along with the Kindle version.  ...

COVID-19/corona virus as of March 16, 2020

Image
It's difficult to call something dated when it's only three days old, but here we are... Still, I think this article about 8 Key Facts You Should Know about the Corona Virus from Friday, March 13th is worthwhile reading. Fact #7 - "Symptoms include cough, fever, and shortness of breath."  Or, for me, Wednesday. I've been approached by a few people about security and safety during this time and the reality is that mass panic levels generated from a pandemic are beyond the scope of most people who study self-defense, myself included.  But, since we have to face it, we might as well plan knowing what we know. Apply the basics:  lock your doors and windows, doors all the time, doors and windows at night no matter how nice the weather.  Pay attention to what your dog is doing.  Never, ever open your security door to an unknown person or even a known person who seems to be making up excuses to be there.  Neighbors will turn on neighbors if supplies run...

COVID-19/corona virus as of March 15, 2020

There is so much unknown at this time. The panic level is off the charts.  Panic is never a good response to anything, but the rise of it can lead us to reasoned action.  So, how much of the underlying emotion leading to this panic is justified? I do believe the MSM has been yelling "Fire" in crowded theater.  But, we're not even sure there is smoke yet. It has already been a wild, disastrous ride economically and many are going to find themselves between a rock and a hard place.  I'm no socialist, but I hope apartment landlords and bank mortgage managers allow some grace while we get through this.  Sending families by the thousands out onto the streets because they lived paycheck to paycheck is not in the best interest of this country. Here is a link of the David Harris Jr show interviewing Gary Heavin , a health care expert.  It's long at an hour, but I won't bury the lead:  he said this could be worse than the Spanish Flu due to the incubati...

Reading in Times of Trouble

Image
More and more, it looks like we'll all have a bit of spare time on our hands. Rather than spend it binge watching "Mean Girls", pick up a book and read. First and foremost, for all of us, not just those of you facing your own mortality for the first time, is to be right with the Lord. If you don't have a Bible, you can download it for free as an app (or course!).  I like YouVersion, which just comes up as "Bible" on the App Store.  Right now it has five start with 4.8 million votes.  You can easily search, select from different translations, and even choose preset reading and study plans. Start with the Gospel of John.  From there you may with to continue with Acts and Romans, or fall back to the Old Testament and read Genesis.  Many find comfort in the Psalms and I find great wisdom in Proverbs.  But, start with the Gospel of John (fourth of the first four books of the New Testament). I believe in a mix of Biblical study mixed with some n...

Countdown to COVID-19

I recently came down with the flu, and when I say "down", I mean down and out, O-U-T. It was he worst pain from the flu that I have ever had, bar none.  When I coughed, I thought the front of my skull was coming off. Fortunately, I made it to the doctor quickly and was put on Tamiflu, which I believe is shortening the course of the disease. I say all of this as a preamble to what the nurse told me as she handed me an extra mask, "Here, you'll need this, we're already at a national shortage." Ironically, my wife, who also has the flu, works in a medical office and had a patient who said she had been exposed to the corona virus.  The woman was overreacting, but the timing was classic and the degree of suffering made one think. It's been much talked about how China will lose much industrial and manufacturing capability due to the effects of COVID-19.  Similar to the United States, much of China's economic might is in small and medium businesse...
